Marriage Equality

Justly Wed is committed to the marriage equality movement. Why are we so passionate about this idea? Because we believe that same sex couples in committed relationships should be afforded the same rights and benefits of heterosexual couples. As current law stands, same sex couples are denied 1138 federal rights. These injustices include costlier health insurance, the denial of social security or pension benefits in the event of a partner’s death, and more burdensome tax rates, to name a few. As you know, US state laws vary widely in terms of language used to define partnership and the rights afforded to same sex couples. Pioneering states like Massachusetts and California have been on the forefront of marriage equality laws, a number of states have passed domestic partnership laws, while 44 states have adopted either state constitutional amendments or passed Defense of Marriage Acts, both of which serve to limit gays and lesbians ability to marry. Discrimination is Unconstitutional, Unjust, and Unhealthy

We know that discrimination is wrong. In 2004, The American Psychological Association, the largest mental health association in the world, released a position statement supporting the legalization of same sex marriage and opposing discrimination against gay and lesbian parents (click here). Denying same-sex couples equal rights and protections under the law is unconstitutional.
